Collagen is a structural protein (long chain of amino acids) found in our bodies. It is the most abundant protein in the body and has a unique amino acid profile. As such, collagen is a major component of bones, skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. It provides structure to these areas and functions to hold all these things together. Many people think of it as a “glue” and actually the word collagen comes from the Greek word “kola”, which means glue. There are different types of collagen, but I, II, III are the major types and each can function in different aspects of the body. Primarily, collagen types are grouped together because they have similar functions. Collagen peptides provide support for skin elasticity and thickness.
After collagen is absorbed in the body, it works in the various tissues where cells will build the peptides into complete collagen that support the areas that need it – skin, hair, bone, muscle, etc. Hydrolyzed collagen peptides refer to collagen that has been broken down into much shorter chains of amino acids, which creates a form that is better absorbed into the bloodstream. Coenzyme Q10 belongs to a family of substances called ubiquinones, and is a water-insoluble, wax-like substance, that is part of the cellular respiratory chain. Coenzyme Q10 can be found in spinach, broccoli, nuts, meats and fish. It is synthesized within the cells of the body, and is involved in electron transport and energy production in mitochondria. In the cellular system, it functions to generate energy from oxygen, in the form of ATP, for bodily processes. CoQ10 also exhibits activity as a free radical scavenger and an antioxidant. The antioxidant activity in the mitochondria and cell membranes protects against peroxidation of lipid membranes which supports tissue health throughout the body. Supplementation of CoQ10 may be beneficial for reducing oxidative stress within the tissues of the body.
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid or hyaluronate is a glycosaminoglycan distributed widely throughout connective, epithelial and neural tissues, and is commonly used in skin care products.
